What to Expect on the Marangu Route
The Marangu Route starts from the Marangu Gate, which is located on the southeastern side of the mountain. The first day of the trek involves a four to five-hour walk through the rainforest to the Mandara Hut, which is located at 2,700 meters above sea level. The following day, you'll trek for six to seven hours to the Horombo Hut, which is located at 3,720 meters above sea level. This is where you'll spend an extra day to acclimatize to the altitude.
On the third day, you'll trek for four to five hours to the Kibo Hut, which is located at 4,703 meters above sea level. This is the final hut before the summit push. The summit push starts at midnight, and it takes about six to seven hours to reach Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters above sea level. You'll then descend back to the Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to the Horombo Hut and then to the Marangu Gate.
